I have been addicted to Otrivin for 7 years. Sound strange? Well I took it fo 3 days for a cold and on the 4th day and thereafter COULD NOT breathe without it.

nasal irrigation does zero, you pour it up your nose and it ges right down your throat! Sudafed does nothing exceot make your heart race and if you have Raynauds it can limit the blood flow to your hands even more and cause damage. Breathe right helps alittle but pops off during the night. Isn't there anything to help?

Home remedies such as the one suggested above (peppermint oil), using a steam from a boiling water you can also add instead of Vicks; salt, vinegar or eucalyptus oil. Aside from getting rid of your stuffy nose you also get a free facial. ;)

How does a lay person know what's actually causing a stuffy nose?

Here are my 10 comments about the article:

1. Many people think that sinus pain and pressure is an infection, but in most cases it's actually a migraine of the sinuses. Unfortunately, doctors still give unnecessary antibiotics.

2. Nasal saline is great for some people, but you have to understand that long-term saline use can sometimes aggravate your sinus problem. A recent study showed this to be the case. Many people like hypertonic saline, which has a paralyzing effect on your nasal mucous membrane cilia, causing stagnation of your mucous. Even with nasal saline, you can have a mild rebound effect that's similar to nasal decongestants, leading to addiction.

3. Pseudoephedrine, although useful for many people, can raise your blood pressure and can cause major stimulation of your heart, and cause insomnia. You have to be careful.

4. A major cause of nasal congestion that goes undiagnosed is flimsy nostrils. Breathe Right Strips or any of the internal nasal dilators can help.

5. Chronic rhinitis, where your nervous system is overly sensitive to weather changes, chemicals, scents or odors, is a major cause of chronic nasal congestion or a runny nose.

6. People with chronic nasal congestion tend to have smaller jaws and narrow faces, and most can't sleep on their backs.

7. Nasal congestion can aggravate snoring or obstructive sleep apnea, which is undiagnosed in 90% of people who have it.

8. Snoring doesn't come from the nose. The sounds are produced by the soft palate, which is aggravated by nasal congestion, palatal narrowing and tongue base collapse.

9. Most deviated septums are not from trauma. It's from underformed upper hard palates. When the roof of your mouth gets pushed up into the nose, it buckles your nasal septum, while narrowing your nasal and oral cavities.

10. By not breathing through your nose, you're missing out on nitric oxide, which increases oxygen in your lungs by 10-20%.
