One slip does not mean failure and that is an important point. But alcoholics have an ability to rationalize that exceeds most people's especially when it comes to drinking/using. One drink for many people after months of not drinking does not create a pattern. But alcoholics also have a rationalization system that makes even one drink dangerous. Once one drink is taken, the alcoholic can rationalize that one more will not cause any more harm--then it begins all over again. The alcoholic doesn't need pattern reinforcement like most when it comes to the behavior of drinking. It take one moment of rationalization that doesn't get effectively countered. That needs to be considered before inserting a dangerous statement like the last one in the subsection "Give it three weeks."

it takes 21 times to make a habit, and it takes over 21days to break a habit..but the issue willpower said may work for 10 out of 50 people. Why? Because it was
written in these days hard times and critical days would be among us, and things
would go from bad to worse. By concentrating on making one's life more simple is
one of the key's to willpower. Stop looking to things that advertise it's so call benefits. What we see and hear is the best seller, the more we see and hear, the more our heart wants that item. That is not what many talk about...it's not what
you need or want, but what someone wants to sell you.

I don't know if the author has any chemical addictions, but I think it is dangerous to tell an alcoholic that taking one drink does not lead them back to alcoholism. Chemical addiction is unlike many other bad habits. It takes TOTAL ABSTINENCE to achieve true sobriety from drugs or alochol. Even one slip after a period of abstinence can set off the addictive cycle again and if addicts get in their mind that this is OK, then they are setting themselves up for a downward spiral into a full blown addiction again. If you have never been chemically dependent then you can not completely understand that sometimes taking one more drink or hit or needle or cigarette or chocolate cake can lead someone down a path that will lead to a stronger addiction that they may never be able to escape from and it may lead to jail, insanity and even death. Addictions are not just bad habits. They are deathly habits!

Thinking long term is a great approach but I think it is hard for those who have "issues" they are dealing with to get through these at that very second they have a craving. It's a great idea though in theory. I have been trying to eat more whole foods, drink more water and take my Vidazorb chewable probiotic everyday and even though these come pretty easily, working out does not. I try but in the moment I see that I have a lot of other things I need to be doing and when I think long term, I still think of other things I should get done. Tricky for this situation!
