Ingesting alcohol close to bedtime can relax muscles in the throat that keeps the airway open, causing more breathing pauses, more apneas and a sudden spike in heart attacks, especially in the sick or elderly. Eating late also aggravates more reflux during apneas, causing ore inflammation and more obstructions.

Of course, you can argue that emotional stress of winning or losing can also aggravate this vicious cycle.
