(HealthDay News) -- If you've had a heart attack, it's vital to follow your doctor's orders to help prevent another one. It's also important to understand factors that can increase your risk.

The American Academy of Family Physicians offers this list of risk factors for a subsequent heart attack:

  • Getting insufficient exercise.
  • Drinking excessive alcohol.
  • Being overweight.
  • Having high cholesterol or high blood pressure.
  • Having high blood sugar, especially if you're diabetic.
  • Smoking.
  • Having too much stress.
