Kudos to Dr. Ford and nuts to the AAP for such misguided information.
Independent health and nutrition researcher, Matt Stone at: http://180degreehealth.com is on the right track and provides some great insights into this entire situation and our national eating disorder which has been created. This is only one of many "alarming health trends" in our great country.
Keep up the good reporting US NEWS.

Our friend James is 36 yo and needs quadruple bypass surgery. He's not obese, he exercises, he eats healthy. He has a bad family history, and he tried to manage his cholesterol with diet, but diet modification just doesn't cut it for those with a strong genetic predisposition. Perhaps if he had taken statins in his youth he wouldn't be facing this surgery now. Even if the surgery is successful, I think it's likely he won't live to see his 2 small children graduate from college. So Stan from Montana why don't you keep your opinion about what's idiotic to yourself until you learn a bit more about who this affects. And Cindy of Florida most people can't tolerate niacin side effects, that's why it's not used more.

Teach your children to get some exercise, stay away from Sugar, and eat healthily.
Statins for kids is an idiotic, drug-addled response to the mistaken belief that cholesterol causes heart disease.
Shame on big pharma. Shame on us all for even considering the easy way and all its costs.--Just pop a pill, why take any Real responsibility?

Therapeutic doses of niacin, which have been used & studied since the 1950's, have done much more than what statin drugs like Crestor promise. From lowering LDL to improving C-reactive protein levels, to lowering triglycerides, to enlarging lipid particle size, to increasing longevity, no other medication has been found to be as effective as niacin.
There's much written about the therapeutic use of niacin on the website www.cholesterolscore.com . If only half of what's said there is true, then niacin is terribly underused as a medication for improvement of all the blood/lipid numbers. I've been using niacin to control my cholesterol for almost five years. For me, niacin's side-effects became almost undetectable after a couple of months. After having used niacin for several months, my cholesterol numbers improved so much that my doctor suggested that original numbers may have been a testing mistake.
