Sharon and Jane, please note that it is NOT the Caffeine in coffee that was associated with decreased risk of stroke. In addition to researching coffee intake, the researchers looked at total caffeine intake and decaffeinated coffee consumption. They then concluded that it was the components other than caffeine in coffee which accounted for decreased risk of stroke.
Note however that this is not a case-control study and the finding must be taken with a grain of salt.

From what I read, I drink plenty of coffee daily (2-4 cups), however, my high cholesterol may void me of any of the benefits from this behavior.

A seeming problem with this study is the fact that researchers only measured caffeine consumption by how much coffee the subjects drank daily. Most people have no idea how much caffeine they actually consume because this central nervous system drug is an ingredient in almost EVERYTHING. Caffeine is an ingredient in beverage, food and pharmaceutical products -- even candy bars and chewing gum!
It would not be out-of-the ordinary for a research subjects to drink 3 or 4 cups of coffee, drink a bottle of vitamin water, chew 3 sticks of gum, swallow a cold relief pill every 6 hours and eat a candy bar daily. This could add up to three times more caffeine than researchers actually calculated. And those subjects who said they never drank coffee still consume caffeine.

This is heartening news as I down my second of approximately 6 cups of delicious plain black coffee for today. I hope it's true because I've taken a bit of flack from others because of this "bad, unhealthy habit".
