George D. Pamplona-Roger, MD

Medicinal herbs have been used for many centuries in many cultures. The interest in the use of herbs and plants is growing, as it becomes apparent that pharmaceuticals often do harm even as they do good. A conservative estimate today is that one out of ten medical cases is related to medicine's adverse effects. Medicinal herbs provide not only curative action, but they help to regulate life processes and prevent disease before it starts.

VOLUME 1:

Provides a basic introduction to plant construction, which helps in the identification of plant species and in determining the useful parts. Covers basic gathering and preservation of plants. Describes preparation of various treatment methods, such as teas, infusions, extracts, poultices, baths, fomentations, etc. A brief but thorough section is given on plant photosynthesis and chemistry. Plant toxicity is also covered.

VOLUMES 1 and 2:

The description of medicinal plants and the conditions they are useful in treating begins in Volume 1 and continues through Volume 2. Chapters are divided into sections of the body, such as plants for the eyes, nervous system, heart, arteries, respiratory system, etc. A comprehensive list of specific diseases is given. For instance, in the chapter on the nervous system, conditions are further broken down into fatigue and asthenia; depression and nervousness; nervousness and anxiety; stress; insomnia; aches and neuralgia; headaches; migraine; etc.

A list of effective plants is given for each condition, along with the action of the plant on the body, and general usage suggestions. More specific descriptions, illustrations and specific usage suggestions are given for key plants in each category. At a glance, one is able to see if there are cautions in the use of the plant, what other diseases may be treated, and what parts of the plant are useful. Separate indexes for diseases and for medicinal plants.

Includes a reference CD that individually lists diseases and conditions covered in the books, and gives a comprehensive listing of plants (with illustrations), that are effective for treatment. Cross references are given to the page in the books where more information can be found. Stand-alone application.

Excellent resource to learn more about using plants as therapy in gaining optimal health or fighting many illnesses. Great gift idea!
