I apologize, I did not read the article first because I did not understand how to maneuver through the assignment portion of this curriculum. I hope it does not hurt the outcome of my passing the course too much. Respectfully, E. Perdian.

I'm all for keeping things cheaper, but keep in mind that the OTC products aren't FDA approved and therefore aren't FDA regulated so there's no one making sure that what they say is in the bottle is actually in the bottle. Herbal supplements and vitamins bought over-the-counter have no one regulating them and I can promise there are definitely some that don't have what they say they do.

Actually most fish oils on the market in the US are fish 'liver oils.' Like cod liver oil. The liver is what filters the fish's blood and is where most toxins accumulate. Therefore, fish oils extrated from fish livers have higher concentrations of PCBs, dioxin, and mercury. Especially bigger fish that consume smaller fish. If you go with fish oil read the 'ingredients' to see what oil is present.
The best way to go is a reliable source of fish oil (extensively processed and non liver) or Omega-3s refined from algae. It seems odd to produce DHA/EPA from fish when the fish get their source from algae.. and we can grow algae much more easy than we can fish. Why not just start from the source and avoid the dangers?

there are already sites from the UK and from the rest of europe that sell ethyl ester of EPA(same thing as Lovaza) from their websites in those countries. There is no need to worry about heavy metal or dioxin poisoning from fish oil due to the fact that all those metals collect in the muscle not the fatty tissue. Ethyl Esters are supposed to be more potent that regular fish oil. Also Lovaza and brands that can be bought OTC from the Europeans have slightly better profiles for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure than regular fish oil. Also, ALA, the form in flaxseed oil goes bad very quickly. So you have to refrigerate the oil, versus fish oil which does not have to be refrigerated. Flaxseed oil is just as good as EPA/DHA for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. In older adults, however, it has a slightly higher risk associated with it of macular degeneration. However, it is not a big enough risk to scare you off if you are vegetarian or cannot tolerate fish.

There are excellent over the counter brands. Let's keep big pharma out of this since they don't know how to play nicely. At least try everyone on the cheaper good brands first for a few months and see if they do the trick of bringing down triglycerides.

does it matter the proportion of epa to dha or if one took a mixture without knowing how much of one or the other

Sorry, but in my comments above I forgot to mentioned the brand I found that had the highest EPA/DHA over the counter. It is:
Ortho-Omega Fish Oil 180 softgels (formerly Mega-Omega) Ortho Molecular
There may be others, but this is the most potent I could find other than Lovaza or Omacor.
