I think you might be wrong about latitudes above Atlanta, GA not being able to make UV-B rays in winter. We live in Chesapeake, VA (Latitude 36) on the border of North Carolina near the coast and during the month of February, the UV index has averaged 3.5 to 4 to up to 6-7 on some days, and we've had temps of 50's, 60's and almost 80's some days, and I sit out on our back deck 10-15 minutes a day between the hours of 11am and 1:00 pm and my skin feels very warm and toasty and when I'm done it's slightly pinkish. I'm very fair also. Most of the latitude maps I've seen on the internet say that you can't get vitamin D from the sun at latitudes 37 N and higher. I thought I had read that if the UV index is 3 or higher, and the sky is clear, and it's close to solar noon, you can get vitamin D from the sun.

I love to sit in my kitchen bay window in the winter and fall months. Will that give me enough sun? I'm 75 and female

This article is dated June 2008 and mentions a study that was going to be started later that year. What is the name of the study and have any results been published yet? ?

I recently found out I have a severe Vitamin D deficiency. My Dr recommends 5000 units daily.

Since several people in my family have been diagnosed with skin cancer, I naturally took to the shade. I drive for a living, and the windows are always up. I also wear sunscreen. I have also found that I do burn and tan, with the windows up, unlike what was written in the story. So, I will just keep on doing what I am doing, and adding the vitamin D. Maybe on the days that I do not work, I may go outside with no sunscreen for about ten minutes.

I have been using short 5-10 min doses of light therapy via a uv both for 30 years and have seen a great response in patient vit D uptake, as we synthesize it best from the sun and sources of light. As in most cases like mom use to say, "its not the use its the abuse", so keep time half to a quarter of what you might want so you are sure you dont irritate your skin by burning. I received some comments that tanning beds are as bad as smoking, again more small doses. My mom had vit d def, she was rx a box that sat on our diningroom table making it often difficult to eat back in the early 80s. this started my investigations while a chiro student. so far lots of good and no backlash. Peace and all Gods love and health. sorry for the typos... kids calling me... :-) !!!

I read somewhere that the best time to get Vitamin D is between sunrise - to 11 a.m and then from 3 p.m onwards as the uv rays are the least at that time. However according to you it is the UV rays which manufacture this vitamin in our bodies. What to follow?

Since glass absorbs about 90% of uv radiation it doesn't leave enough to really get your vitamin d but it does leave enough for the sun to damage pictures over years of exposure.

"For one thing, UV radiation doesn't penetrate glass"...

That's an interesting and seemingly false statement. Why then do they make windows and sunglasses with UV protection? Why then did I get a sunburn on the tops of my hands from overexposure to sunlight while driving in the car?

You lost me with that statement and now I wonder what else I should not believe in your article. Please back your statements with citation and source, or just stop publishing.
