My mother age 81 cannot tolerate statins nor can I. She has tried everything on the market until February 2010 she had two stents and they put her on Wellcall. She takes six pills daily and there is not generic form. Expensive but has lowered her cholesteral dramatically.

Does anyone know if I can take an antibiotic while taking a statin? and if so, what one? My dentist just gave me ethromyicin (sp?) to protect my heart after dental work but the insert says I can't take antibiotic if I'm taking a statin. anyone know what I can take? If you know, can you email me at barbbat@yahoo. Not sure what to do now.

Benicar HCT 40/12.5 and aciphex.20mg, 1/day.just stopped vytorin today as i was taking small dose 10mg every other day and got muscle aches and nausea.HELP!!!! I am so disheartened trying to feel better. Thank You. Alan

There is a alternative to direct release statins that could help those who have muscle pains and aches. Altoprev is a extended release formula that helps release a dose of lovastatin into the blood over 24 hours instead of the quick release formula. I personally have had Zocor, Lipitor, and even Zietia. All caused the same muscle pain which was relieved only by stopping the statins direct release meds. Why is Altoprev ER not mentioned as a alternative to direct release statins? It has been around since the 80's and works great on bring down cholesterol, ldl, etc, and stops the muscle pain everyone who trys direct release statins has. The worst one being Crestor. I recomend that individuals having muscle pain with these other statins try Altoprev ER. It works.

If you have muscle weakness, immediately stop taking the Statin!
I have had difficulty walking, climbing stairs, getting out ouf chairs, etc. for 11 months after stopping Lipitor. I estimate that I have only 10% of my normal strength. I took Lipitor for 5 years without problems. These side effects are in my experience, DEVASATING.

In "When it Hurts to Take a Statin," you say about niacin, "...can be toxic to the liver." Speaking of niacin, the article says, "When taken together with a statin, even a smaller niacin dose could cause muscle discomfort or weakness."
Perhaps the author of this article is innocently repeating erroneous "facts," about niacin, which he has heard.
