I'd encourage people who are diagnosed to ask lots and lots of questions. What works for me? Are there alternative treatments, less expensive drugs, options that I need to know about? I found this video helpful: http://whatstherealcost.org/video.php?post=five-questions

I think this is backwards

"substituting soda or sweet tea for unsweetened, lower-calorie beverages"

Should it not be "substituting unsweetened,lower-calorie beverages for soda or sweet tea"?

Get screened for obstructive sleep apnea. One recent study in Endocrine Practice showed that Type 2 diabetics had almost a 50% incidence of obstructive sleep apnea (where the AHI was >10). Sleep apnea causes your sugar levels to go up, as well as to enhance insulin resistance. Sleep apnea has been shown to be an independent risk factor for diabetes. Untreated sleep apnea is also known to cause or aggravate hypertension, heart disease, heart attack, or stroke. Sleep apnea screening should be a routine part of all diabetes management.
