There are several reasons why people have a hard time eating healthy. We all have a hard time, not one of us eats completely healthy one hundred percent of the time. However, it is more important to be able to bring solutions to people who don't have any. By solutions I mean there should be areas that can be used to walk and places where people can buy fresh produce. Instead of the government subsiding corn they should subsidize produce. People also have to have control over what they eat and learn that in the long run no medication can ever bring them back to their normal healthy state. The key is to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and walk a few steps every day.

"those at higher risk are African Americans, Asian American, and Hispanics."

So, as a Chinese who lives in Europe, am I NOT at increased risk of diabetes? What is "Asian-American"? Does it refer to people who are half-white and half-Asian? IS that what the article is saying? That it is dangerous to have mixed race kids? Please explain this better or use descriptive and authentic words to describe people and subjects - not phoney political correctness.

What this article fails to confront is the hard truth: the people with the genes that cause type 1 diabetes are able to live to the age where they can comfortably have a family, and chances are many of their kids will have type 1 diabetes. Their kids will grow up and have a family, and their kids will have type 1 diabetes. Unless a true cure for type 1 diabetes is found, the spread of the genes associated with type 1 diabetes will continue to proliferate throughout our society.

It's sugars, not fats, which cause obesity and diabetes as well as high cholesterol. Not that fast food fats are good for you--they are not. Cause cancer and other problems. But sugars are the worst-especially high fructose corn syrup. The epidemic of diabetes has followed the trend of using HFCS in sodas and sweets since the late 70s and early 80s. This is also when the young people began getting fat. Think about the advent of the "Big Gulp" in the early 80s.

The vitamin D Theory of Obesity is worth reading.

Obesity/metabolic syndrome are yet another sign of chronic vitamin D deficiency.

In essence, reduced vitamin D levels, year round, fool the body into thinking it is facing perpetual "winter".

The human body evolved to recognize falling vitamin D levels resulting from less direct sun contact with skin (lower angle sun as fall approaches). Less vitamin D triggers humans to release chemicals within the blood that direct more fat to be made in preparation for the evolutionary starvation time (winter). Only in the last 50 years, or less, was winter NOT a time for starvation for humans.

Excess caloric intake result in lower vitamin D levels across the board. Circulating vitamin D is removed from the body and stored in fat, waiting the time when it is released when fat is burned.

When spring arrives with higher sun and more vitamin D synthesis, fat making chemicals are suppressed by circulating vitamin D and everything is peachy.

Healthy vitamin D levels (50-80 ng/ml) result in weight loss and lower BMI across the board. In recent studies, for every 2ng/ml of raised circulating vitamin D, 1 lb. of long term, permanent weight loss was recorded.

The process is subtle yet inexorable. Decades of indolence and sloth take their toll.

Bottom line whether you believe the theory or not maintaining a healthy, reasonable BMI (which will raise and maintain healthy circulating vitamin D levels whether you know it or not) is the key to preventing diabetic diagnosis.

Why do Africans in Africa have lower rates of diabetes? Or Asians in Asia? Answer: You don't see them eating food out of the box from the freezer, or our of a sealed plastic bag. You don't see them drinking any sweet carbonated beverages. They eat mostly food in its raw form - whole grains, rice, potatoes, fruits and vegetables. This is the substance the human body is meant to consume.

Processed foods, added chemicals, and sweets are a major cause of diabetes. Think about what you put into your body.
