Need to make one thing very clear - where excess Beta-carotene flushes out of your system, vitamin A does NOT. If you take too much vitamin A, you can cause your body much harm. You need these vitamins and a DOCTOR to make sure you do not take a level that is harmful.

Diabetic Retinopathy is another major age-related eye disease where eye vitamins have shown to have a significant preventative effect. Diabetic Retinopathy (meaning damage to the retina) refers to weakened blood cells on and around the retina (due to unbalanced sugar levels) damaging the retina, causing loss of vision. Loss of vision can literally happen overnight with this disease, and can subsequently go away on its own in a day, week or even months. In almost every case, if left untreated, damage to the retina can be permanent, causing permanent vision loss or blindness. Taking eye vitamins for eye health is one way in which you can decrease your chances of getting Diabetic Retinopathy. Also, recent medical studies and clinical test performed by the National Eye Institute (NEI) have found direct links between these vitamins and minerals and eye health.

When you go looking for the right vitamins, lots of info on a product called SEE - but BE CAREFUL HERE!!! Ingredients show this product has Beta Carotene, as well as viatmin A, etc. Where the body normally converts beta-carotene into vitamin A, I was taught that diabetics can NOT convert beta-carotene. So, please see a doctor (John of OH) and do lots of research before taking vitamins, even though you must take something to protect your eyes.

For John of OH - My husband has diabetes, gives himself two shots a day, etc. He doesn't take care of himself as he should so I pray a lot for him and it's amazing how much info on old products I've learned about for helping him (I replaced the expensive 'ulcer patches' with Genetian Violet - sells for just a few dollars and last for a very long time. That purple stuff stains, but it works so well at healing sores that otherwise wouldn't heal on his legs.) Also, after his legs looked so bad I didn't think he'd keep them to the end of this year, I had him go on 'Butcher's Broom' (old wives tale swears by this for circulation and I've known it to stop leg cramps in several people). After the first month, his legs looked much better. Still, each person is different - so run any changes you plan to make by your doctor and do lots of research. We have a wealth of info on the internet, thank God.

John of OH, so sad to be so bitter.

My eyesight is important to me too. I do what's necessary for me and my family to be safe and have the necessities. I also have diabetes which has advanced further than I would like, but I do what I can to take care of myself, and I do see my ophthalmologist regularly.

Annual eye exams are a must. If you have insurance, your doctor can "code" at least parts of the exam for the illness that is covered by insurance. Check within your City to see if there is a teaching hospital. Most need patients for the medical student to work on with Doctor supervision. Their fees are very reasonable.

Take a supplement like Bausche-Lomb's Preservision. They have been proven proved to be helpful. They contain luetin, selenium, etc that are essential oils/minerals for eye health.

Wear sunglasses with UVA/UBA protection whenever you are outside - even if overcast the harmful rays come through.

Ignore sarcastic and negative people who use these sites as a political platform. I'm concerned about my eyes, as you also are. Our vision is serious business, take the politics elsewhere.

$ee an ophthalmologi$t regularly, $$$$$. Can't afford it?

Start eating plenty of carrots, and hope for the best. After all a totally free economy without the taint of socialism is the way to go. Eliminate the poor and lower middle class by any means necessary.
