the most obvious one is of course the simple fact that we have diabetes medication. lets look at the data from before diabetes meds and after. the diabetics who would have died earlier due to no insulin drugs now live longer and procreate, which means more kids born with diabetes or with that gene.

Autoimmune reactions. Give your kid acidophilus (fixes the "too clean" part and the too much dairy part, and gives the immune system something to chew on), and make sure they get at least 5 min of direct sunshine a day: the T-Cell has a vitamin-D receptor that keeps it from going haywire. Also, throw out your triclosan containing products.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends either breast feeding or an infant iron fortified formula until the infant is at least 12 months old. Studies in Sweden during the 1980s found that breastfed infants and infants not exposed to cow milk during the first 12 months of life do not develop Type 1 Diabetes. Additionally, delaying the introduction of solid foods until the age of six months or more has been a nutritional recommendation of the AAP since the early 1970s. Children with type 1 diabetes need to be longitudinally studied.

still under the "radar" is the effects of radio frequency radiation from wireless technology that we are pounded with every day. the background radiation is at least 11,000 times the natural amount we get from the earth and sun. auto immune diseases and other health conditions are now epidemic and no one looks at this obvious source except a small community of scientists that is now beginning to get the word out. RF affects fetus's and new born babies and may be a cause of the huge rise in autism. check magda havas' work on diabetes and RF by going to http://www.magdahavas.com also http://www.wirelesswatchblog.com

I don't think the poor diet theory works. I know of two people who were diagnosed with type I diabetes: an 11 y/o female and a 2 y/o male. Both children were raised by parents who understood and provided nutritious meals. The young boys mother (who had some medical training) took him to the hospital soon after the night sweats and the increased thirst started. The young girls family (no medical training) had to wait until the child became more physically ill from the elevated blood sugars to get the diagnosis.

The high incidence of type I diabetes may be due to the increased awareness by both parents and doctors which is good for young people; it has to be better for the child to start the diet/lifestyle changes and insulin shots at a young age before the child knows another lifestyle.

I think type I diabetes is due to turning on and/or off of a gene which stops the production of insulin. What tells the islet cells to stop producing insulin? There is probably a protein (it's always a rogue protein) that tells the islet cells to take a break- an unfortunate long break.

disrupts the process of getting sugar out of the blood stream and into the cells

I agre with jim and dr bang it has to do with all the junk people eat today and not a hig percentage of us try to keep healthy

Well.............part of this is correct. We have known since 1939 the contribution of vaccines to sugar dysregulation! SO first off, vaccines are causing immunopathology. Insulin is an important player in the cascade for our health. Of course the other toxin is high fructose corn syrup, the starches in all of the foods, and the lack of fresh air, sunshine and movement! SO what do we do? We stop the immune dys regulating and chronic inflamation stimulation via vaccinations, theya re not what make health anyway, we need orgainc fresh foods, vegetables and fruits and lower the burden of animal products on our bodies, we get outdoors for fresh air and exercise, move the lymphatics, get the Vit D and cut the sugars out . Too bad no one in Congress listened to Dr. Harris Coulter in 1979 when this was layed out for Congress about the vaccines, or currently to Dr. Barthomew Classen. Vaccines are responsbile for more health decontruction that anything in the history of man. Only vaccinated individuals develop auto antibodies and only vaccinated individuals develop autoimmune disease. Autoimmune disease in one generation means genetic disease in the next!

Has the author. Completely forgotten about the sustained toxic load imposed on us by chemicals and bio-incompatible substances in food. What about the rise of high fructose corn syrup replacing sugar in all prepackaged foods. Substances like propylene glycol (anti-freeze) are ubiquitous on prepackaged foods. Why is there no mention of this and the likely impact on health.

It's high in Hawaii too, and we certainly don't lack sunshine and vitamin D! What about diet, sugar, all the crap we are eating today!

I wonder why genetics was left out of the possible causes of the increase in Type 1 diabetes. More and more women with Type 1 diabetes are now having children and more and more fathers with Type 1 diabetes are fathering children. All these children are much more prone to develop Type 1 diabetes themselves and then to pass it on to their own children. This could cause the number of cases of diabetes to increase expotentially. When you add in other possible causitive factors, it's a wonder that Type 1 diabetes isn't increasing even faster than it is.
