Yes, GO, Dr. Faustman and Phase 2 Trials!!! I've been insulin dependent for 40 years, test blood suger 7 times a day, take 5 injections of insulin per day (4 humalog, 1 lantus) and am now experiencing macular edema in one eye and more retinopathy in both eyes, also cataracts in both eyes. A wonderful opthalmologist in Fairbanks, AK did great laser work on my eyes from 1986-88, receiving praise for it for the next 20+ years. I just hope what's going on with me now can be corrected as well. Question: Let's say the "Dr. Faustman cure" comes true. Will complications such as mine stop in their tracks (after proper treatment is concluded)? Will microaneurysms stop happening? Will periferal nerve damage stop happening and maybe even regress? What will complications of diabetes do when there's mo more diabetes? Thanks.

I have a 16 year old grandson with diabetes. He injects daily. When can I expect to get treatment for him please? Who do I contact?

I am a type 1 diabetic. I use an insulin pump. Yes it was a blessing to go from injections to a pump. I can't imagine not having to deal with insulin at all....Whatever it takes to make her treatment/cure a reality should be done. Sometimes I wonder about the intensions some have in the medical field about finding cures for any disease at all. Good luck Dr Faustman, I'm counting on you!!!

Shawna,

quite frankly , DR Faustmans research is on track and moving forward. It does cost a lot of money to do FDA trials and there are strict guidelines. There are reasons for this. I personally do not want to be anyones guinea pig, as I feel like the disease has cost me enough already in my life. I am a insulin pump user, and I will be cured when this research reaches its logical conclusion.

The research is on track, as of this date in 2010, Phase 1 trials have been completed, phase 2 trials are in the works and are awaiting funding. This is the stage where we find out if BCG can restore some beta cell functionality. The question that they are looking into is what dose is needed to kill off all of the bad antibodies so that they dont just come right back. this is not about killing off one cell, this is about selectively eliminating a population of cells in a person and it is a bit more complicated than one would think.. oh I can just take 1 bcg shot and be cured or not.. there is some serious science in the works here and it goes well beyond what the detractors are saying about her. Dr Faustman will succeed, the cure will be available and at this point the political environment is such that big pharma will not likely be able to interfere with it. So as hard as it seems it is a waiting game at this point. Hang in there!

I have a daughter, 15, who was diagnosed as diabetic several years ago. I was informed of Dr. Faustman's work by two diabetes educators at the hospital we took our daughter to for early stabilization and education. Both educators are diabetic. Their comments to me were, "This is the only treatment that I would consider taking". That is enough evidence of trust in Dr. Faustman for me. Since then, I have met the good Doctor a few times, and she's explained her procedure to us in great detail. I am definitely a fan, and await the second round of trials to start this summer.

I really hope she is sincere with the research, but just have some questions-

Why does the cost of the research go higher so often, and this is published while recent news from the lab is not?

Dr. Faustman, I hope you are good in heart. Many people's lives would be saved if your cure could be presented ASAP. They would only have you to thank.

What happens to the Faustman labs after the cure is presented? Would they continue to try and heal other diseases? Or would the whole project be dropped from Mass. University?

I hope questions like these can be answered soon.

Actually it is not clear what the rogue cells are attacking... there is some evidence that, rather than attacking the islets that produce insulin, the rogue immune cells are attacking insulin itself (synthetic or other insulin from outside the body has a slightly different makeup). As a result, the islets get subdued as well. From my own experience as a Type I of almost 20 years, I sometimes require less insulin even when all other factors that I can observe remain equal, and I attribute this to native insulin production that has not died, or that has become resurgent. The theories are not yet proven, but her evidence is good, and I expect to get full use of my own self-produced insulin after her treatment is proven.

I have a son age 2 going on 3 in march and he was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I am hopeful for a cure and the direction in which dr. faustman is going with for the cure sounds like a sure winner. My son does not deserve this and neither do any other children or in fact anyone of any age diagnosed with type 1. So I too will try to support this research in whatever way i can afford.

besides attacking the beta cells, what else does the rogue cell do. does the rogue cell prevent illness. i have had diabetes for three years now, and not sure if the rogue cells has killed all of my beta cells yet, but i would think it has because it usually will within a few months. If DR. DENISE FAUSTMAN has any luck with this treatment, i would love to help her out and let her test her theory on myself.
