January 13, 2012 RSS Feed Print

(HealthDay News) -- Youngsters may get hurt if the wrong toys end up in the wrong little hands.

The American Academy of Pediatrics offers these suggestions for choosing safe toys:

  • Make sure any toy is age-appropriate for the child.
  • Always read the product instructions.
  • Don't allow children under age 10 to use a toy that must be plugged in.
  • Make sure any toy given to children under age 3 doesn't have small parts that could present choking hazards.
  • Toys for young children should not have any strings, ribbons, balloons, button batteries or magnets.
  • Store all toys in a toy chest or cabinet, keeping younger children away from older children's toys.
