This article is incorrect when giving the the detection rate of DS by amniocentesis and CVS. The detection rate is 99+% for both. Please look up the statistics on these both before writing an article and giving false information.

Thanks,

I too think a test to tell a pregnant woman her baby has Down Syndrome is so not necessary. However, I took the course in my pregnancy that I would not do any testing because it would not matter to me either way. I stuck to that and I was blessed because God gave me my daughter who has Down Syndrome and is the most beautiful, healthy one year old child! She was fortunate not to have any health problems. However, that said, 17 years ago, my son was born and had to have a liver transplant at 3 weeks of age, other than that he is a typical child. There is no test out there that could've told me that ahead of time, so in my opinion, this type of testing is so not necessary, except to stress out a pregnant woman. By the way, to the other writer, there is no need to prepare for a child with Down Syndrome, as they are no different than any other baby, because typical babies can have just as many health issues as babies with Down Syndrome. Children with Down Syndrome can do the same thing as typical children, and a few maybe a bit behind with their skills, but that said, I can say that I don't take my children for granted and that every milestone is so precious to us. Everyone will have their own opinion on this article and maybe I would feel different if these tests were for many other disabilities and some terminal illnesses in the fetus, but simply for Down Syndrome? I think it is ridiculous.

While I agree that some people may use this test to decide to terminate their pregnancy that is not always the case. This test would allow parents to know earlier that they are going to be having a child with Down syndrome so that they can prepare and plan for the additional needs of their very special child. Given the extra time to prepare they could find doctors that are more qualified to treat children with down syndrome and it would also allow the parents extra time to research down syndrome so that they can help their child grow and learn. Just because there are tests out there for people to find out if there child is going to have special needs does not mean they are going to abort the child.

So now we can find out if the baby has downs syndrome...why? I know why, so we can conveniently dispose of it through abortion. Have you ever know anyone with Down's Syndrome...they are God's saints on earth! Lord help us all.
