Kids Are Getting Amped on Caffeine, Even at Age 5

When I was growing up, my parents didn't let me have sodas or coffee until I was about fourteen. Yes, fourteen is when I had my first cup of coffee; mmmmm.... coffeeeeee. Getting back to the point, parents today are too preoccupied with other things such as internet, texting, talking on cell phones, etc. If you choose to be a parent then get your act together and actually do some parenting. PLEASE!

sorry, as a child i drank tea nightly; and coke, pepsi, and dr pepper whenever it was afforded. i drank coffee with milk, albeit more milk than coffee. i always slept well. i played outside in days.

my son is 8 and does not like carbonation... if he did, he could have anything he wanted, within reason. 3-5 glasses a day would not turn my head. my coffee is the strong kind that makes expresso look like weak water. my son tastes it sometimes. he has since age 1 or sooner. if he wants to taste it, i let him.

he also is active outside, climbs, plays, runs and all the fun children should have. he has his laptop for video games and watches tv too. but the key is HE IS ACTIVE. IN TEN MINUTES HE IS OUT LIKE A LIGHT!

so we contrast in caffeine. but coffee as well as green tea is a cancer fighter. antioxidants prevail in coffee and in switzerland they say the stronger the better! many children do not have the access to safe playing areas and may stay cooped up in the house playing video games or watching tv. these can be bad, too, but activity will eliminate some of the bad. it is not all caffeine.

It sickens me when I see parents buy their little kids sodas. I mean these are kids 5 and under, sometimes two or three year olds. Why? How? I can't even gobble down a coke or sprite cause its too strong and they give it to their kids! Also those sugary juices. However, I admit while growing up, my parents gave us sugary juices and every now and then a soda, but for whatever reason,by the time we were teens, all 4 of us grew to not like them anymore.

I have been saying this for years that kids are getting too much caffein and sugar, so end up being diagnosed as having ADD, etc. I remember being high on Mt. Dew when I was a kid - my brother & I bounced off the walls after drinking it, but it never dawned on my parents that that was the cause.

unfortunately i see this article pertaining to most of the kids and teens i see every day. between classes, traveling the hallway, i take close examinations of my surroundings often , and i usually see a drink called the "rock star" sitting in a side pocket of a backpack or even kids passing it around in their circle of friends taking sips till it runs out. i see it affecting the way kids learn because they stay up late and they end up telling me they were too "hiped up" to get any sleep from the 2-4 rock stars they drank during the previous day.as a result they are less willing to work the next day from the amount of sleep they were able to get that night. I have no helpful suggestions considering the fact that i am just a kid myself, so i will leave that to another parent that might reply to this article.

alcohol was banned from energy drinks to discourage teens from alcohol consumption because they were the target audience for those energy drinks. the government would want to discourage alcohol because the number one cause of death among teens is motor vehicle accidents, and alcohol is certainly a big player in that. caffeine, though, isn't really dangerous, unless you look at its effects over a long-term period of time. like not getting enough sleep. if you don't get enough sleep from the time you're young and you drink a lot of caffeine on a daily basis then your development can be affected. and not getting enough sleep is a big issue for teens, as well. our lives are so busy, but in truth we need sleep the most. i don't think caffeine will ever be banned from drinks, though, because honestly the short-term side effects are incomparable to those of alcohol.
