Parents, Don't Be Conned by Sugary Kids' Cereals

I was raised with the low sugar cereals. Now, I'm buying the healthier versions for my daughter (and my husband, who grew up on the sugary stuff) and me.

Companies rely on commercials and consumers who are gullible lemmings. I don't care that Kellogg's children's cereals have X grams of fiber in them. They also have white flour, artificial colors, artificial flavors, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, etc. (Kellogg's implies that all of their cereals are healthy, but contain artificial stuff.) Seeing that my daughter's diet consists mostly of whole grains and whole fruits and vegetables, and she has at least one bowel movement a day, I'm not worried about her fiber intake.

We buy the EnviroKidz cereals-- mostly the Koala Krisp, Gorilla Munch and the Leaping Lemurs, as they are around $2.50 at Whole Foods; My husband recently found one of the other ones at Big Lots and stocked up. He also found the bars at a Big Lots as well and bought some as treat/bribe bars (i.e., for our daughter on Sunday mornings and mornings we go to MOPS to get her out the door). We also buy the Cascadian Farms cereals with coupons and sale prices. Last week, Giant Eagle had them on sale 3/$9 and my husband used some $1 off two coupons we had. Unfortunately, the grocery store did not double them (even when they don't advertise doubling $1 coupons, they have), but it was still a decent deal. We also buy Kashi the same way-- With sale prices and coupons.

My daughter doesn't know the difference, as this is all she has known. We do buy the store brand Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios if the name brands aren't on sale.

It all boils down to the parent being the parent and knowing how to read and discern labels.
