Brain Surgery for Mary Tyler Moore to Remove Benign Tumor

I had surgery to remove the exact same type of tumor Sept 27, 2010. I too was told 3 options: sit on it, gamma knife, or surgery. Second opinion said not to sit on it as it was already causing me severe headaches 24/7 and blurred vision. Also said it was too close to my optic nerve than what they needed the clearance to be. So I had surgery. Afterwards....where to begin? The issues I have been having are endless and I doubt I will be returning to my job because of them. My head hurts, I still have headaches, I have had nonstop sinusitis and bronchitis since the surgery and I never had a bout of either prior. I have had nerve damage in my left arm. My vision blurs when sitting at a computer or in front of a book (it is now). I cannot sleep. I cannot exercise like I used to as I often have to use my emergency inhaler due to the breathing issues. I have been told oh it is probably related to the tumor and/or surgery, but we don't know for sure. My life has changed so much and I have encountered so many people who have had these pesky benign tumors affect them in the most incredible ways. And no one tells us~! I am dying to know why MTM is having hers removed after all these years - did it change and if so, how? No one talks about it; we need to start speaking up, educating people and realizing that we cannot no longer say "its JUST benign!"

I had a Meningioma removed from dead center on the top of my head over 4 years ago now. Slow growing is not the case in all scenarios- I was just 30 it is was over the size of golf ball. Before it was found, my legs would give out beneath me periodically, had serious headaches, would forget where I was at in thought during conversations (would switch the subject so others wouldnt notice), would dry heave and have horrible stomach pain without explanation, and get physically sick when in the slightest anxiety producing situations. Doctors did not correlate my off the wall symptoms for years. The day it was found, I felt my body was on fire, could no longer walk without aid, kept dry heaving and throwing up, and felt like I was going in and out of conscious (I did go to the doctor 2 days prior and was diagnosed with a sinus infection- despite arguing with him that I did not have any trouble with my sinuses- so again be wary and question anything out of the norm). Anything that grows in your head is not a benign situation- it is life threatening. Please spread the word on this highly downplayed situation. It took over 2 months of speech, occupational, and physical therapy, along with needing quite a bit of sleep, to get back to feeling I had some control. I still suffer from migraines frequently, tinuitis, and the occassional feeling my legs are about to give out.

I give Mary Tyler Moore lots of prayers, but please share your story of your symptoms prior and what it took to get strength and normalcy back into your life.

I might have to have surgery on my M by my right eye/optic nerve. Have been able to avoid it for 5 years now. Did you feel your surgery was needed? http://bit.ly/kOg3RZ

I had a meningioma removed in 2002 and woke up completely paralyzed! I had to learn to walk, talk, do everything all over again! They told me at the hospital I would never walk again. I proved them wrong though and after 9 months in a rehab facility, walked out. I've had 2 more surgeries to correct the damage the meningioma caused. I still suffer from neurological and cognitive problems, plus seizures.

I wish Mary Tyler Moore all the best for recovery from her brain tumor. Hopefully it won't be as dangerous as mine. I wish the article took meningiomas a little more seriously.

I am 48 years old and had surgery to remove a meningioma 3 years ago. It left my left eye partially paralyzed (For six months it was completely paralyzed shut). Another woman I know still has seizures as a result of her tumor. Others have lost their ability to speak, others cannot hear. This is a serious condition. Most tumors are removed without issue, but this is a BRAIN TUMOR, not a hangnail. I was hoping that Mary Tyler Moore's meningioma might bring more attention to this issue -- and funding for research. Downplaying the seriousness of the condition does no one any favors. That said, I am praying for her speedy recovery.

My son has been a Type 1 Diabetic since he was 18 months old. Mary has fought to find a cure for this disease for many years. I am so grateful for her efforts and support. God bless you Mary and a speedy recovery! Love you!

I have a meningioma tumor also that is benign. Its sitting there doing nothing. Its behind my right eye. I go for another mri in August and my doctor says if it still is not moving or growing then I don't have to have another mri for 3 yrs. If yours isn't growing or doing anything, then why have the surgery? I will pray for you. I have heard that these surgies are always a success. Keep me posted on how you do, because maybe someday I may to do that to.
