Save your skin and take a vitamin. When you're 50 and your skin still looks good, you'll be happy you did.

Most high-powered tanning bulbs provide UVA (315-400 nanometers wavelength). UVA's longer rays go deeper in the skin, give a golden-brown tan (very little burning) but we NEED the UVB rays to create our vitamin D-3 (HUGE health benefits, see mercola.com). The UVA causes the most damage to our skin and potential cancers. The FDA has limited the tanning bulbs from emitting less than .003% rays between 260-320nm, which are the "burning rays," but it's only within this wavelength that we can get the benefits of D-3 production. Tan near noon with zero clouds until your skin is lightly pink and no more, then repeat as often as possible each day at noon when there are no clouds.

I think what is interesting about this study is that they fail to point out a couple of VERY important potential facts:
70% of the indoor tanners are females aged between 16 and 34 years old, that's a fact.
When you dive into the deeper stats of that demographic, logic tells you that A) young college aged and young professional aged girls are sure to be pot smokers and drinkers at majority levels. This dismisses the "addiction" part of their study. You cannot make a parallel between the obvious. The researchers are taking a control group of people whose rates of higher than normal alcohol and marijuana consumption are a given based on their demographics.
B) When you get to females in their late twenties into their early thirties, there growing majority in this country are still not married hence putting them in the singles scene of 2010 where again, alcohol and marijuana use are prevalent and dominating vices for social relaxation therapy. Again, your tying a given parallel.
Don't get me wrong, I think that those who frequent tanning parlors are drawn to them by a culture of T&A, bronze golden skin, partying and feeling young so that being said, I think the culture of indoor tanning is dangerous. Now couple that with the skin cancer statistics and you have a lethal cocktail that is sure and eventual death.
My point of writing this is to say that these researchers are not using the proper control group to make their assessment.

People who are apt to be addicts, will become addicts.
The substance or activity to which they attach themselves is less important in the equation than their lack of willpower and state of mind.

I'm starting to think we have an addiction to the term addiction!
Of course maybe there is an addiction here, its one we are born with,
and thats vitamin D. Instead of therapy how about checking peoples
vitamin D levels, and replacing tanning with a supplement?
