We should all see the writing on the wall, which says that the government is moving towards making smoking illegal PERIOD. When that happens, cigarettes will become just like any other illegal drug - a lucrative product for dealers.
I don't smoke, but I consider this kind of goverment interference with individuals intrusive and worrysome. Personal freedom is having the right to do even those things others don't think are good for you to do, as long as you are not depriving someone else of their rights. If someone doesn't want to be exposed to smoke in a persons car - GET OUT OF THE CAR.
More and more the government wants to legislate our behavior - what we can do, and where we can do it. This is the flip side of the government promoting universal health care - if everyone has a right to health care provided by the government, doesn't the government have a right to make sure you live a healthy life-style so you don't cost the government money by getting preventable diseases? Why not outlaw fatty foods? Why not make it illegal to weigh more than 10 pounds over your ideal weight?Eventually the government will move from preventing people from behaviors that are unhealthy to requiring behaviors that are healthy. Why not make it mandatory that everyone start the work day with 30 minutes of exercise if they want to keep their job? After all, you have a responsibility to be healthy because otherwise, you're going to be costing society money....
