My son is diagnosed with Asperger's and while it is considered "mild" the implications for him and for our family are quite large. Recognition of the presence of this "disorder" is very valuable, as, while our son is not exactly mainstreaming, he is doing much much better than he would have if his issues weren't recognized. It is consoling as a parent to know that there are organic issues and that his dysfunction is not just a result of bad parenting. I suspect that there are currently many outsiders out there that are on the autism spectrum and could become much more functional and contributors to society if their issues were recognized.
