People who suffer from mental illness are likely to experiment with illegal drugs to seek relief from their symptoms. Thus drug us may not be the cause of mental illness, but simply be a symptom. Please read:

just another way they can deny soldiers there benifits...hell gis learn to drink and abbuse everything they can in the army to get rid of stress or they will go nuts and the army even promotes drinking..NOW THEY WILL JUST SAY VETERAN IS JUST A DRUNK>>NO BENIFITS

This is an example of media playing for the headline that sells. Your story fails to say if the substance abuse problem is caused by the trauma suffered by these Veterans or as your headline screams the cause of the problems. You have done a great disservice to our brave Veterans.
Some Veterans who suffer from PTSD and other mental problems have tried to relieve the pain associated with combat stress, survivors guilt and a raft of other issues of combat with alcohol and other substances. Self medicating will continue to be a problem as long as there is a stigma attached to combat related mental issues. Why don't you report about these issues?
