I am a 70 year old woman who has ADHD. I also suffered a serious brain concussion when I was 15 and had to learn to talk and walk again. My maternal grandmother had dementia, and now my mother age 95 has had dementia since her late 70s. I understand that I have several risk factors for developing dementia. However, I do not plan to simply wait for the disease to develop in me. I heard that there is now a blood test that can test for dementia before any symptoms appear and that there is medication that will prevent symptons from ever manifesting. Please advise me as to how I can be tested and aquire the medication if needed. I will travel to anyplace, volunteer to be in a test or whater it takes to avoid the dementia fate. I am physically very healthy will probably live to age 100 like my grandmother. I finished high school [tho with a cane, a patch over one eye], endured years of physical therapy, graduated from University with a BA degree, raised 2 children, travelled and have llived and am still living a very exciting, full life. I intend to fight to avoid dementia and hope that you can help me.

@ Susan - are you assuming that the diagnosed adult with ADHD is being treated with stimulants? Perhaps it is simply a correlation with the physiology of the brain?

SE, a problem cannot be solved until it is diagnosed. You are so right that we must focus on a solution...at least put some strategies in place. We can sometimes get frustrated bc there are parents who have their heads in the sand and won't get their child/adolescent diagnosed, so the problem can be accurately "solved."

MUCH ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO BE "SURE" TO GET THE RIGHT LABEL ON COGNITIVE PROBLEMS. WHY? ISN'T IT MORE IMPORTANT TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS? ALZHEIMERS, PARKINSON'S W/DEMENTIA, ADULT ADHD, LEWY BODIES......THE LIST GOES ON.

Is it ADHD that correlates with a 3 fold increase in dementia, or ADHD treated with stimulant medication that is the correlation.
