I read the article and found it interesting. I can tell you that it is easy to hide a eating disorder from your family, because I have for years. Mine is not as obvious because I do not look like I weigh under 100 pounds, but yet I have an eating disorder. The only person that paid attention to what I was or was not eating and drinking was a friend. He noticed which days were good days and which days were bad days and he always told me about it. This country needs to recognize that eating disorders are not purely a mental disease. It is something that the person struggles with day to day and meal to meal. You never know, someone you know probably has an eating disorder. It is up to you to decide what to do with that information.

Shocking that reading the last two comments affirms my belief that most people do not understand eating disorders. But I do understand why because I was one of those people six months ago. My daughter has an eating disorder and it is now that I understand the seriousness of this psychiatric disorder. In fact it has the highest death rate of all psychiatric disorders. It is up to us, Nancy, to educate everyone else that this is a very real disease and it not simply 'she just needs to eat more'. And you are right, it is the hidden epidemic.

Hogswash!! The reason that western Cultures around the world are Half sick and Half depraved is because of sinister individuals and organizations for decades upons decades have Psychologically perverted these societies putting the Wolves in charge of the Hen House. Taking the healing from the Elders and the Wise Ones/the Priests and so; through their agents Darwin (a former minister),Fracis P. Galton' Carl Wundt, Freud; then my most grcious Liberal brothers und sister we graced with the writings in our Universities and Societies, all formed by religious charity, (please forgive my grammatical errors-poltergist in persuit) they thrust on our, "young minds full of mush', Hegel, Karl Marx, Lenin, (not Lennon you mind gaming Gorilla in the room),Trotsky! Thank you 100million souls. Then you Brilliants Graced us with, HITLER---STALIN---TOJO---MAU---IDI AMIN---FIDEL&RAUL---DANIEL ORTEGA---THE VENISULIAN MONSTER and the midget from Iran. Sounds like she doesn't have a support system at all! Maybe you could read your comments at her funeral, since it doesn't sound like you have any intention of stepping in and doing the difficult job of saving her from herself. That's a shame.

My mom is 86 years old and can't continually feed/monitor my sister. My sister has become a monster like the girl above. Arguing with everyone, looking like a skeleton, passing out leading to concussions (8 in 5 months--auto and motorcycle accidents), bloody scalp, ratty hair, lost all her teeth, and bruising on her body.

My sister lost her job, is now losing her house and husband, and nobody wants to visit her. I heard on Dr. Phil that the family should break the bonds with the anorexic just to save the rest of the family. I have no clue.

Two anorexics have died that I know. One just last week. And in one funeral I was sitting behind another anorexic.

This seems to be an epidemic that needs to be addressed instead of hidden.

Good luck to the Maudsley approach.
