I was misdiagnosed as bipolar for twelve years, before finding out I was actually ADHD-PI. The only time I really did well consistently, day to day, was when I attended a 16-week CBT group run by grad students at the local university.
I kept asking other counselors, psychiatrists, etc. if we could take more of a cognitive therapy approach, but they declined in favor of talky "family" or "holistic" approaches.
CBT works, and any psychiatrist who dismisses it in favor of their own pet approach isn't qualified for the job.

12 sessions made a difference? What am I doing in my 3 years worth of psychotherapy, sometimes twice a week?

This is indeed good news for those of us working with individuals with ADHD. However, the authors imply that CBT is superior to other forms of therapy (as presented in this summary). The study did not evaluate other forms of talk therapy. Rather, CBT was compared to relaxation and education. In addition, one study does not constitute "proof." The conclusions seem to have outstripped the data.
