Today's College Students More Likely to Lack Empathy

They're confident because they always got a trophy for everything they did...wait until they get to the real world where only true success is rewarded. I see the new graduates at my company lost when they don't get fawned over for producing below-average to average work. It's kind of funny in a sad way. Hmmmm maybe I'm the one lacking empathy! LOL

How can they not have empathy? They should be killed.

TERRIFIC!! i think this is great, i mean whats more excellent then our future being self confident and assured? if anything the next few years should be more promising for america as a whole, well except for Obama. And as far as other peoples problems, i have a myriad of my own trials and obstacles, go whine about your own to someone else, you dont see me complaining about a disabled schitzophrenic mom or finnancially disadvantaged life. Work for yourself and earnt things on your own merits, NO MORE HANDOUTS

I completely believe this, I'm 14 and a lot of people are exactly like this. What scares me is the younger kids in elementary, they're out of control swearing and wanting to "go out with each other" something needs to change!

You should have spent more time with Lisa from Florida and encouraged her to get a college education. You see she is a simpleton who thinks that the world has simple problems that need simple solutions. Of course problem A only needs to be solved with solution B. If we all just had normal names, like your daughter Lisa, then the problem would be solved solved. No need to think about other externalities.

""The increase in exposure to media during this time period could be one factor," she said. "Compared to 30 years ago, the average American now is exposed to three times as much nonwork-related information. In terms of media content, this generation of college students grew up with video games. And a growing body of research, including work done by my colleagues at Michigan, is establishing that exposure to violent media numbs people to the pain of others.""

*yawn* Sae blame the game BS that has been going on, Jack Thompson, is that you?

I am a fan of unique names, to think something like that can create such a complex impact or widespread is just faulty reasoning. Not all the children that are in the "generation me" have names that are spelled weird do they?

Liszaa of VA 11:47PM May 29, 2010

Sounds like it was a foregone conclusion. Recycled "blame the video games" bullsh*t with no real proven link. Really intellectually lazy of you, Sara Konrath.

What did anyone expect? It's considered "abusive" to teach your kids anything these days. Spankings are only fit for barbarian parents, and sending your kid to their rooms without supper is fit only for a visit from child services. When our kids are taught that they're the most important people, too precious for harm to ever come to them, especially from the people that love them, then of COURSE they won't know what to do when those situations arise. And if they don't even CARE, because they don't know that severe penalties will await them, why should they even TRY to empathize?

It gets even better for the teachers; they have to deal with self-righteous little know-it-alls who feel they deserve an A without trying. They'll argue that cheating isn't cheating, and that the simple act of payment was enough to get an otherwise-free ride. Then throw self-righteous parents into the mix, the kind who doesn't think their kids are capable of evil, and you've got a surefire way to ensure your kids will be socially braindead for life. Punishment is a thing of the past. These days, no one's interested in their own faults, only everyone else's.

"Many people see the current group of college students -- sometimes called 'Generation Me' -- as one of the most self-centered, narcissistic, competitive, confident and individualistic in recent history."

'Dem is weasel words if evah I heard 'em.
