Last year the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) released results of a study, which, according to news reports, were surprising.

There study found the the majority (53%) of the nation's alcoholics are now young adults, age 26 or less. Most began drinking as teens.

Given this CDC study, the NIAAA findings are not surprising at all.

A University of Connecticut student, in her plea to college administrators and other adults for action, described her peers as the "wasted generation."

Given these studies and the abundance of evidence of the culture of abusive drinking by young people, her characterization seems correct.
