Let me ask you this, if your child was extremely sick would you do anything to get them better. The "questionable" treatments that are spoken of in this article nearly cured my son of autism. While there are some subtle signs, he is now considered "typically functioning". Shame on the medical community for not supporting more of these biomedical treatments. All Big Pharma wants to do is come up with a "miracle pill" that they can make billions off of and that will be the end all be all for autism! Consider the above treatments...proactive medicine rather than reactive (although in our son's case it was a reaction to his autism) has been our saving grace. Don't ridicule that which you don't know!

My son's DAN! doctor prescribed the methyl-B12 in addition to come other medications for correcting some gut issues. Lo and behold, IT WORKS! I was a skeptic too, but since starting the B12 alone (prior to the gut meds interventions), my son's speech became more clear, his attention increased, and he really started to come out of his own little world. I'm so very thankful that his doctor put us on the right track with this God given gift!!

Cyanocobalamin b12 is available as a patch, which seems a much more convenient, inexpensive and pain-free alternative to intramuscular injections.

The MIND Institute at UC Davis Med School is conducting large scale longitudinal study on autism. On of them is the Autism Phenome Project headed by Dr. David Amaral who I believe is also President of INFAR, a major group, probably the largest group in the world, of autism researchers.
Dr. Amaral gave a talk for the parents and some things REALLY ought to be told to the public:
1. They have identified an antibody pattern in mothers, of antibodies to fetal brain, which has NEVER been found in the mothers of normal children. It looks like, if you have this pattern, you are going to have an autistic child. All mothers of one autistic child, if they are going to have another kid or might have another, should get tested for this pattern (that is not Dr. Amaral's recommendation, it's mine, but if the pattern is 100% tied to autism, doesn't it make sense? Not sure how you get the test however without being in APP)
2. We've been told kids with autism have abnormally large brains. According to APP, they do, BUT, it's only a subset, I think it was about 15%. Somewhere around that same percentage have abnormally small brains. Most autistic kids do not have abnormally large or small brains, at least, not their entire lives, this varies with age also.
3. Some kids with autism have antibodies to their own brains, but surprisingly, a significant percentage of normal kids have antibodes to their own brains. However, preliminary data indicate normal kids tend to lose the autoantibodies with age, whereas autistics may not. At first they thought it was a very high percentage of autistics with brain autoantibodies but found out as the kids aged the normals lost theirs.
4. Some implicatons for treatment in the very long term: IL-10 is abnormal in some autistics. PECAM is abnormal in some. There may be ways to regulate these molecules back to normal in the autistics, however, Dr. Amaral does not say that the abnormalities are causative of anything, AND, what's more, abnormalities could be part of a beneficial process. Cytokines are a minefield therapeutically anyway from what I'm told by a molecular biologist friend.
5. Dr. Amaral and many other researchers strongly emphasize the extreme heterogeneity of autism. There are probably dozens of causes of what is called autism by the psychologists. Countless ways for the brain, the most complex thing known to man, to malfunction. You have to soldier on and try to get information on YOUR kid as much as possible. Your kid's autism may have nothing to do with another kids.
All the people at MIND have been a great pleasure to work with, I am very impressed by them and grateful to them, but if you put your kid in, it's probably not realistic to expect any treatment any time soon, perhaps ever. On the other hand, research studies are the best chance you have.

Is anyone listening out there? Vitamin D is the ULTIMATE ant inflammatory and it seems linked to just about every human misery, and I mean that literally. Read The Vitamin D Theory of Autism as proposed by Dr. John Cannel. In the meantime supplementing to at least 50 ng/ml- blood serum- can do no harm and certainly prevent a lifetime of misery. I don't pretend to know anything about the autism -> vaccination link, and I pray that none actually exists. But, this study and the anecdotal success documented through the use of methyl b-12 strongly suggest oxidation and methylation are the major culprits leading to damage in sperm, ovum, and zygote, which suggests ongoing disfunction in an affected child's cell function. Methyl b-12 promotes methionine [syntase] reductase (EC 1.16.1.8), which is an enzyme that catalyzes hydroxyl radicals, and may be related to the the methyl donors: S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) In addition to Omega 3's, has anyone used SAMe in conjunction with the methyl b12 injections? What about other antioxidant enzyme induction methodologies as adjunctive nutritional therapies : (1)Resveratrol and/or (2)isoflavone rich (whole) soy protein with probiotics?
