Given that there's no cure in sight, the best we can hope for is medication that will slow the effects of Alzheimers (SlowingAlzehimers.com). Maybe with Obama shaking up the moribond FDA, such a pill will be forthcoming (TheAlzheimersPill.com).

My father was building a three story house of his own design at 67 when the symptoms of Alzheimer's/dementia really hit. When I say building a house he really was. Hammer, sawing, nails, plumming, and electrical work. It was to be his last project. Now he has trouble cutting up his own food. Keeping your mind and body active was not something that saved him at all. He never sat and just did nothing. He was always planning and working. Now all of that is gone.

Yes my husband has alzheimer, he just doesn't know it.

He is cussing me out daily, he gets hostal hourly, he

has broken furniture when he's mad, he has pushed me down.

How does a caregiver control a wild man like this?

I'm afraid most days. I give him what he wants at all costs

He also put all income and savings into accounts I don't

sign on. When he gets worst 1, 2,3 yrs I don't know how

I will be able to pay the water bill. He has a hard time

he has control of all the mail I only see - resident junk

mail. He can't remember where he has put stuff, then he starts

cussing me out claims I moved it, or took it. He is only

62 and quit his job when he was 59 because he didn't want to

work anymore.? I guess he just couldn't keep up.

Caregivers need legal advice.

MOST OF THE PEOPLE I MEET IN THEIR OLDER AGE HAVE A SHARP MIND AND ARE DOING SOMETHING THAT HAS THIER MIND WORKING CONSTANTLY. WORK ETC. COULD THIS BE A FACTOR?

MY DAUGHTER'S NEIGHBOR, A GOOD MAN, WAS NORMAL, BUT NEVER REALLY DID ANYTHING AFTER HE RETIRED AND NOW HAS ALZHEIMERS, IT BREAKS MY HEART TO SEE A GOOD MAN GO DOWN THIS ROAD. I PRAY SOMETHING IS DONE FOR ALL WHO ARE AFFECTED. THE DNA WE ALL HAVE MUST HAVE ANSWERS. WE'VE COME A LONG WAYS, MORE MONEY AND EFFORT MAY HELP MOVE US IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION TO FIND THAT CURE WE ARE PRAYING FOR.

Im so sorry to hear that you have no one to take

care of you. Please contact your local Alz group

as soon as possible and see what they can recommend for you to prepare yourself. An utmost urgency!! If I lived in SC I would help you. Hang in there!!

Judy, I understand how horrible you must feel. It's hard enough even with family. Please call the Alz. Assoc. right away, and at least get the possibility of many kinds of help.

Muser, I totally agree that "the best hope against Alzheimers is an accidental break-though treatment". I sure am hoping the front end of the baby boomer gen figures this out.

I feel bad for you. The United States should insure people like you are taken care of and can at least not have to worry about something as basic as health care. Try contacting you local Alzheimer's association they will help you find the help you need. you can go to: www.alz.org/ for help.

that the best hope against Alzheimers is an accidental break-though treatment. Remember, Viagra was an accident of research on something else.

Muser of NM 2:31PM March 25, 2009

I have just been diagnosed with Alz. I'm 66 and have noticed that I just kept getting lost and could not remember simple tasks such as how to prepare a meal. Since I have been told I have been very depresed. I hope they will continue to research this devastating disease. I have fear and I don't know how to stop being afraid of what will happen since I have nobody to care for me. I'm alone and a widow.
