It is important to remember that while post partum depression has a biological cause, not all people that may express the appropriate biology will develop ppd. Environmental causes do have a significant link to allowing the expression of genes/biological conditions etc. being expressed. It is true that no all women who many be at risk for developing ppd will avoid this by doing yoga or avoiding stressors. However, some women might truly benefit from practices that do alter brain chemisty and are associated with the relief of depression in general. This coupled with other forms of treatment may be the real ticket to producing a healthy woman ready to take on the new difficult challange of being a mother.

As a psychotherapist who treats women with postpartum mood disorders-depression, anxiety, bipolar, PTSD and psychosis. (Depression is not the only psychiatric struggle a woman can experience postpartum.) It is great to hear that there is another tool to inform women, their families and their health professionals about their risks for PPD. But, the idea that yoga and avoiding stress is the antidote rather than appropriate and professional treatment is outrageous. One of the many dangers of inappropriate and inadequate treatment is that it downplays the struggles that a woman and a family faces and when it does not work, it can leave a women feeling like she has failed again--a hallmark of depression.

If they only had this information 12 years ago when I had my first child. Its very hard to describe what post partum depression is like. It made what should have been the happiest time in my life the miserable. I would never wish it on any woman. My doctors never spoke of it and me being a young mom at 22 didn't know I what I was experiencing was a medical condition.

Great advance in understanding postpartum depression. But I have to say I nearly spit out my coffee when I read "They could take yoga classes and avoid severe stressors" when describing the women identified at higher risk for developing postpartum depression. Just when research is supporting a biological cause for a real disease, the researcher has to go and give a "psychological" treatment. If only yoga would work! Reminds me of when obstetricians treated hyperemesis gravidarum as a psychological abberation and accused women with the disease of not wanting their babies. Fyi - I am an OB/GYN.
