The article is interesting, but it's not clear to me what the "modern surgery" is. Is the spinal fusion a complete replacement of the rod surgery? That's implied by the phrase, "The rods became obsolete in the 1990s when surgeons adopted new methods to fuse the spinal column." Or are shorter rods put in and the rest of the spine fused? The article isn't clear. I'm very much interested in whatever the modern surgery is and would like to know more. The Spine Journal referenced is geared towards surgeons so it wasn't very easy for a lay-person to decipher. Thanks for any clarification you can provide.
