Health Tip: Factors That Increase Risk of Rickets

Deficiency in calcium, phosphorus or vitamin D linked to disease

(HealthDay News) -- Rickets, a Victorian-era disease marked by weak, deformed bones and caused by a deficiency in calcium, phosphorus or vitamin D, has made a comeback in recent years.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons cites these risk factors for rickets in children:

  • Insufficient calcium in the diet.
  • Insufficient exposure to sunlight.
  • Dark skin.
  • A poor diet.
  • Lactose intolerance.
