Common causes of the injury

(HealthDay News) -- A hernia occurs when a sac formed by the abdominal-cavity lining pushes through the abdominal wall.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine says typical causes for development of a hernia include:

  • Having chronic constipation, which causes a person to push too hard during a bowel movement.
  • Having a chronic cough.
  • Having cystic fibrosis.
  • Having an enlarged prostate and pushing to urinate.
  • Being overweight.
  • Lifting something heavy.
  • Having undescended testicles.
