I speak from first hand experience. I work midnight to 8am, and quite often sleep 4-5 hours a day. I found that there were no moments of happiness, as if serotonin was completely shut off. I could never concentrate, and was often short fused and angry before anything happened. When I took a week off, my wife and kids said I was a new man, and the home was a happy place again. Lack of sleep affects more than just the individual, it affects everyone in contact with that individual as well. Sleep is far more important than most people realize, and articles like this need to be shared!

i thought it was very interesting and this should be more important in news and stuff since this is such a big deal. students need more sleep to be able to concentrate and learn at school and adults need more sleep to be able to raise their family and provide for them, also health risks too.

I knew that healthy sleeping patterns were crucial to a person’s well being. There are several ways to ensure a proper sleep. Having a bed routine were one ritually prepares for bed with activities like brushing teeth, changing and reading systematically before bed can help one train their body to fall asleep faster and deeper. Right before bed Staring at an electronic screen for too long right before bed can also cause restless sleeping, and should therefore be avoided. Last piece of advice is to only use your bed for sleeping and sex, anything else will trigger restless sleeping in the future.

"Those who get five hours or less per night have approximately 15 percent greater risk of dying"

Ummm...We're all going to die. This is a rather unclear statement. Are they saying those people are at 15% greater risk of dying in the next year? 5 years? Maybe it's implying they will die before average life expectancy. Yet there is no mention to any of that. It just says they will die. Well guess what, buddy. You will too. In fact, when you die, you can catch up on all the sleep you missed.

Great article as we celebrate National Sleep Awareness Week! Thank you for sharing. During the month of March, take some time to focus attention on healthy eating habits and nutritious food choices. Eating right not only improves your overall health, but it also does wonders when you get your sleep!
