Could a Dangerous Fungus Lurk in Your Dishwasher?

We had lived in a home that was built in the 60's with all copper piping and never, in 40 years had any black fungus in our dishwasher. We moved to a home that was built in 2000 and has all plastic piping and we have the dishwasher fungus problem. I understand that copper will kill most bacteria. Is there a correlation between the new and modern use of plastic piping and black fungus? Has anyone noticed this? Has anyone done research on this?
