I was 10 years old when my dad taught me that armadillos were leprosy carriers and that their meat shouldn't be eaten. That was 45 years ago. He was not a scientist, he was a deputy sheriff.

When I was a kid in the 1950s and 1960e, my parents regularly had to get rid of pesky armadillos that would root up and burrow in our property in Central Texas. I remember vividly their repeated warnings to me about not touching armadillos because they carried leprosy.
