Like someone once said, " Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body."

Most public libraries in NYC have reading groups...the library will provide a book for one to read and then the group mweets and the book is returnrd after the discussion. I've done it and it is very well run. There might be a reading phobia, and then there is literate non or anti-readers..."I want to experience life not read about it".? Then again people are so coarsened by the profit motive that if the reading is not paying big dividends its just not worth it. So the classics go begging...white bald men, this attitude is like self-castration, not well motivated and not well directed. Thank uou.

It is sad and amazing to know that Florida is not even considered. Is it because there is a large latin population in South Florida? Do we count for anything? And then, most say there is no discrimination in USA.

As a research librarian, I'm interested in this article very much. Comparing with China, the U.S. is a reading country. I'm moved by the First Lady's national reading initiative!
Hopefully, Xi'an where I've been living since late 1970s, is one of the most literate cities in China!
Happy Reading!

America needs to better promote reading. We need to discuss why these cities are so literate. What the benefits of such an honor. Why can't other cities improve? Many of my former instructors were of German background and were proud of their education.
Let us do more to promote literacy with all people. Great work.

AM I WRONG OR DO I DETECT A STRONG GERMANIC BACKGROUND FOR A NUMBER OF THOSE CITIES? I GET THE FEELING THAT THE GERMANS ARE
BIG READERS AND WRITERS. DOES ANYONE ELSE FEEL THAT WAY?
