We had to go to the US Consulate in Marsailles, France when we had our

passports, travelers checks and plane tickets stolen by gypsies. We were

treated very rudely, weren't allowed to go the bathroom in the Consulate AND

they used whiteout on our son's passport which caused us great trouble

while traveling in Eastern European countries. It was a horrible experience when

we thought that when we got to an American Consulate we would be "home" and

treated like family. Not the case.

No argument against what written, but under some circumstances the local American Embassy may be able to latch on to assistance from oher US government agencies including the Department of Defense for possible emergency evacuation and medical care. Don't be afraid to argue with embassy and other US government personnel; often they are not completely aware of what can be done.
