I am a vegetarian (have been since 2nd grade; I'm 28) and I developed severe food allergies when I was 26 years old. Having allergies to: tomatoes, celery, flax seed, lima beens, sesame seeds and prunes while being a vegetarian is very limiting. I don't recommend "an all or nothing approach." I am working with several nutritionists to make sure I have balanced diets. I have found a lot of success with eggs.

I agree with Karen that home grown is a good way to go. I'm on my third year of vegetable gardening. Hoping it gets better and better, and bigger and bigger! For awhile I was only buying meat at New Seasons, but I kinda got out of the habit because Fred's is more convenient. I pretty much only buy lunch meats there, though. The best way would be to go halfsies or quarters with relatives or friends on a side of beef from a local rancher for your meat, and grow your own veggies. Maybe even make the time to learn how to can a few things to get you through the winter.

A plant based diet with a strong emphasis on all kinds of beans and lots of healthy greens - preferably home grown is the ticket to staying healthy.

What we buy in the supermarkets these days simply cannot be trusted. If it is not one thing, it is another in this "industrialization of food". Tainted meats, vegetables and animal by-products are poisoning us all; all the while, the corporate giants greedily gobble up profits at a staggering pace. This article simply confirms that reasoning yet again.
