Very good informative article. I have these symptoms and was hoping it wasn't a cold. I take 3 of the meds listed and still have these symptoms but guess it would be much worse if I wasn't on them. Thanks for all this information.

Thinking about moving to Spokane, Wa. I was told there is no ragweed. Is that true? I need to know because I have a very severe allergy to ragweed. Thanks, Donna McBride

the walmart 'equivalents' are not equivalent rx's at all, but cheap

imitations of the REAL drugs. substandard chemicals with their own pharmaceutical ratings! ugh

Those products were probably too good for the pharmacuetical companies; they need their American consumers to keep buying products in order for them to stay in business.

Natasha , love your idea but do not count on it, it will not be profitable for drug companies and for politicians that get their campaign money from drog companies. It is a business my friend, they eliminate the problem and will stop making millions of dollars a yea, so sad but thy rather have sick people, thta is why they contaminate all we eat with chemicals and preservatives, so we get sick and they make their money. I have all ragweeds allergies all came positive plus 4, and not even prescription medication work, I got the cortizone shot yesterday and had serious side effefcts.. so, what is left for me???

Ragweed is primarily found growing along the edges of the roads in my area (in fact, that is almost the only place I see it growing!), and I often wondered if a program to control its growth would be effective. Possibly flame weeding it carefully during the growing season would be helpful to greatly reduce the plant's numbers - eliminate the source, eliminate the problem. If this is the case in most places, then alleviating the suffering of 10-20 million by controlling the plant itself seems like a good investment. Perhaps then planting a better ground cover would make sense as well to help out-compete it along the edges of the roads - maybe some type of short clover / legume?

There are two plants, both of which go by the name "ragweed," that wreak havoc with allergy sufferers. One is common ragweed (http://landscaping.about.com/od/weedsdiseases/p/common_ragweed.htm). In keeping with its name, this is weed that many people see all the time, without, alas, being able to identify it. The other is called "giant ragweed" (http://landscaping.about.com/od/weedsdiseases/p/ragweed_allergy.htm). Again, the name doesn't lie: This plant can grow to be very tall. Unfortunately, it's unusual stature hasn't made it any easier for people to identify. But once you identify one or both of the ragweeds, you can at least eliminate them -- and their pollen -- from your own yard.

I just wanted to thank all of the collaborators in this article.... This is extremely helpful information. I suffer from tree pollen allergies and have taken over the counter medications for a few years and last year decided to go without meds..... I toughed.it out for the most part, althought I had miserable days, keeping the windows closed and limiting being outside as much as possible during, what I call "peak hours", aka when it's gorgeous outside... It was good not to feel doped out on claritin. I am hoping to keep doing this as much as I can, hoping that eventually I will be able to endure allergy season naturally. I figure if your health allows for it, staying away from pills is always a better option.
