Research conducted by Seeram and colleagues suggests that the juice from pomegranates—also a good source of vitamin C—may slow the spread of prostate cancer. It also may protect the heart. Some alternatives, which haven't demonstrated the same kind of prostate benefits but have similar phytochemicals: similarly hued fleshy or pulpy red fruits, such as cranberries, red currants, strawberries, and guava, says Mary Beth Augustine, a registered dietitian and senior integrative nutritionist for Beth Israel Continuum Center for Health and Healing in New York.
