There have been 352 outbreaks and 11,163 illnesses linked to eggs. Salmonella enteritidis, which causes infection in the ovaries of hens, was the main culprit. Newly issued federal regulations intended to limit Salmonella enteritidis in egg production will go into effect in 2010 or 2012, depending on the egg producer's size.
