The bill does NOT affect the small produce farmer, the small organic producer, the dairy farmer who sells raw milk where allowed by STATE law, or the importer who stays within food safety guidelines for imported products. The new law is not socialistic, is not a smokescreen, and is not a widespread way for government to enter your life.
Corporate farms, large scale producers/manufacturers, and major food production organizations will be affected as they will now be inspected more frequently. Soils and irrigation waters will be checked for bacteria and other disease-causing microorganisms that we could ingest in fresh produce. Poor animal husbandry and land management will finally be under more scrutiny.
I grew up on a family dairy and poultry farm. We were one of our state's outstanding farm families and my cousins are still have family-owned farms and dairies. I chose food, food safety, and dietetics as my career. And after 40+ years in the business I am glad to see a change in the 1938 FDA laws to help us get closer to a better overall food supply for all Americans. Unfortunately, we probably will see no changes since the new Congress pledges to cut FDA spending. So, even with the best of intentions to help reduce retail foodborne diseases, do not expect federal government oversight without funds. We will continue to see the CDC rack up more deaths and illnesses due to misinformed voters and legislators along with state inaction.
This is why I grow much of my own vegetable stock and get my meats from our family farms. Hope the rest of you can figure it out when you want more and better food supplies and no oversight for safety.

Don't believe the carefully crafted HYPE!!! This law DOES NOT make food safer, only more easily controlled and criminalized. Although these points are what they want you to believe, they aren't true. The FDA already has the power to enforce all the above problems. This smokescreen-named "Food Safety Act" is designed to expand their power to control organic food farms, seed growers and to enforce their personal financial and corporate agenda upon the American public's food consumption. It gives the FDA unbridled power to tyrannize your local herbal grower, organic food store and small farmer, outlaw raw milk and declare many foods, herbs and other natural items to be "tainted" and seize them, while shutting businesses down. The FDA is riddled with corruption and has been an enforcer for corporate & government food agendas for years. This law will EXPAND their ability to tyrannize, seize, arrest, shut down and use other strong arm tactics to prevent anyone interested in natural, unadulterated foods which restore health, from obtaining them. In addition, with this law they can now further poison and alter your foods and seeds without interference. They can now create more GMO's, and other foods with additives known to destroy your immune system. This bill needs to be exposed for what it really is and rejected wholeheartedly.

You know something is wrong when the food industry is begging for this bill. What this bill does is spend taxes to help big business while burdening small farms/producers with more trouble from Washington. My family doesn't buy much food from the grocery store anymore. Imported and wide-scale farmed foodstuffs are toxic and devoid of nutrients. This bill makes people feel safer at the expense of my farmer who can hardly compete with ag subsidies. Washington has no business running farms or simple food operations under the constitution.

Thank goodness and Ga'ai the FDA will have more power to throw away good food like when they threw away nothing but good spinach after all the 'contaminated' spinach was consumed or when they threw away good cookie dough after absolutely no solid proof that any of it had been contaminated (no samples from those mentioning it or saved lot samples were found to be contaminated - just two or three people mentioning it in interviews) or after throwing away eggs when salmonella was discovered at a chicken coop (hahahahahahahahahahahaha! stop it! you're killing me FDA/USDA!).
Oh wait, the FDA/USDA doesn't protect anyone. It just throws away good food to make people think they are worth more than a bucket of spit. Liberal know it alls always assume giving more power to the government is helpful when the empirical evidence shows it is always detrimental. Especially so in this case.

They have had the funds and the resources to do this properly for years. This is just a little bit more liberal control a little bit more socialism. The so called tool box is that needs to be filled is just more money taken away from tax payers that we can not pay for.
