Health Buzz: Dietary Supplements Linked to Increased Death Risk

These study findings from the "Archives of Internal Medicine" are anything but seriously reliable. It's an observational study based on a questionnaire sent to the participating subjects.

These study participants, most probably, took all types of different quality supplements, such as multivitamins. The study methodology didn't call for a standardization in the quality of the nutritional supplements that were ingested.

Unsurprisingly, the study authors clearly cautioned: “It is not advisable to make a causal statement of excess risk based on these observational data [...]”. And “[...] we found that most dietary supplements were unrelated to total mortality rate.”

Many, if not most, accounts of scaremongering over the threat of nutritional supplements amounts to nothing more than hype and ideological-political rhetoric.

For me.....My comment will be people don't need to take any excess of those kinds of vitamins. Unless your doctor had perscribed it to the patient. But.... in other words...Pls. Don't be taking this any of this unwanted vitamins its just ruin your health yet its just be driving yourself down the drain.......Look take it easy folks........Just eat healthy vegetables & have healthy exercise & get good night sleep. Drink plenty of water as well.....Sweating is great because your getting rid of those unwanted toxins inside your body. But make sure your drinking water to replace so you wont get dehydrated...Stay hydrated always.

There are more complete studies out there than this one. The controls weren't managed very well. This study did not take the medications of the participants or the differences in quality of brands of supplements taken into account. It also didn't take into account how many participants had pre-existing conditions who then chose to supplement. I would get a second opinion on vitamin usage....

I agree with this article, we shouldn't rely so heavily on multivitamins. Its not just multivitamins though, other supplements have proven to be harmful too. Check out http://nutritionfacts.org/?p=4597 (non-commercial,science based)
