The 4HB diet worked for me. I began my year at 210 pounds and adopted cycling for weight loss. I was stuck at 195 and out of frustration, dove into the slow carb diet. I was strict and dedicated, even while on vacation, and lost 25 pounds in about 6 weeks. I'm back to my high school grad weight when I was a competitive cyclist and back to a 34 inch waist.
I have my binge Saturday and I blend in carbs when it makes sense (i.e. within 24 hours of my workouts). Still below my target weight of 175 and enjoying my new body at the age of 42. Absolutely no regrets.

As a personal trainer, I understand the concept of the weight lose, the two hour sleep, gaining muscle in 28 days and the ab exercises. The author doesn't say that these are long term solutions. Understanding the value of preparing a bride for her wedding , that bride that wants to fit into a wedding dress and has less than a month. There is also the guy that comes to you and buys several sessions of personal training and wants to put on more mass. This book holds the values of providing results as far as sustaining them is another discussion. The idea of 2 hours of sleep is of value in the short term when perhaps needing to meet a deadline, it doesn't suggest doing this every day for the rest of your life. So far I'm appreciating this book and applaud the clarity it conveys in achieving the results it speaks of. I will immediately reprogram a few clients and see where it leads.

"Because non-REM sleep is just "unnecessary unconsciousness," says Curtis"
Curtis actually says that "non-REM sleep is -as far as he can tell- unnecessary unconsciousness", he admits to not having all the evidence and just saying everything else is unnecessary, he says that he just doesn't know what the sleep is for.

Are olives allowed on days 1 thru 6?

Hate when people critique something they haven't read. Take coach up there. Clearly, did not even look at the book. It proposes not only suggestions for reaching goals but puts the responsibility on the individual. Nor does any industry have much to fear. He's simply repeating what we already know. Return to a less processed diet, avoid sugars, avoid carbs in an out of control way. I lost 11 pounds the first week without cravings and have added my own "theories" to the book. When I get down to 195 which should be in about two weeks, I'm going to start the second phase of South Beach. Why? Cuz I want to and in many ways that the exact message of Ferriss's book. Two hour naps? Not happening. I like drowsy sleep when waking. Kettleballs? Probably but when I get to my target weight, vie got a trainer waiting. I'm doing it my way and his way--which is exactly how I like to live my life.

Tim Ferriss is really a progressive when it comes to life and body hacking. His approach: to get the best results, in the fastest time, with the minimal effort needed. This is not a lazy approach, or a "get rich quick" approach to life or weight loss for that matter. It is modern, simple, and highly effective. Simply put, eliminate the part of the process that waists time and focus on the parts that give you the most benefit. Result: benefits in half the time. I have been using this diet and have recommended to patients of mine (I am a medical provider). I have had outstanding results. For more on this topic please visit my web blog at www.4hourlife.com.

... the "Philupandgo.com" diet... just in a new book or packaging.
I have done Atkins all my life. I get off track and gain a few pounds
then get right back on: protein, water, veggies.... protein, water, veggies...
all you can eat!
The one day of "cheating" comes from the Phil Up and Go diet, popular
in the 80's...
It's all "calories in (eaten) and calories out (exercised off)" or better, just
look in the mirror naked and say:
"Stop eating, you fat #$%^&*(**!!"
So, what else is new?

Those are some of the weakest arguments I've ever seen! They don't even evaluate the claims in the book.
In response to Counterargument 1, the whole point of the diet is to LOSE weight. Once you get to your ideal weight, you choose a sustainable diet. The diet in the book isn't meant to be permanent.
In response to Counterargument 2, the sleep regimen provides the same amount of REM sleep that you get by sleeping 6-8 hours per night. Once you adjust your sleep pattern, you basically get instant REM cycle when you take your periodic naps.
And of course the last one basically grants that Ferris is correct. No one gets a six-pack without cutting a LOT of fat.
I continue to have great results with the diet, and, ultimately, results speak for themselves.
