This article is written in a very biased and somewhat offensive tone. And it seems a little ridiculous to compare what is called a "one-a-day guzzler" to a health freak that only drinks one sugary drink a month. Who actually only drinks one sugary drink a month?

I would like to thing that articles based on these studies would be a wake-up call. But the truth of the matter is that people find it very difficult to change their habbits. Soda with caffeine is very addictive. I was addicted to it nearly 35 years ago. A girlfriend of mine bet me I could not stop drinking soda because I was addicted to it. I proved to her that she was wrong. What I proved to myself when I stopped that I was addicted to it. But I refused to give into the addiction. I have been soda free for these past 35 years. I have one once in a while, but I never went back to drinking 16 oz. 3 to 4 times a day. I owe my life to that bet. Thanks for the articles and if it can make a change in just one persons life, then it is worth it.

Diabetes is caused by a faulty fat regulation system......insulin resistance....

what causes this?

Excessive carbohydrate consumption (i.e. a low fat diet which is a high carb diet) especially sugar... white flour.... starches

Saturated fats are healthy as are monounsaturated fats

The fats that should be limited are the polyunsaturated fats which are by definition unstable and release free radicals upon heating... balance omega 6 consumption with omega 3

A healthy diet would be approx 15 to 20 % protein 20% carbohydrates and 60% fats

diabetes was not a major problem when we were consuming more fats than carbs........

I was pleased to find this article prominently posted on the US News Health site. As a student pharmacist, I've experienced many patients struggling attempting to lose weight or reduce their need for medications to manage their disease states. Oftentimes, patients do not realize that the focus of reading nutrition labels is not just to look at the calorie content of a food, but the ingredients contained within it. A lot of patients who need to reduce fat content don't realize that even though they are eating salads, it’s the creamy salad dressing on top that's getting them. They may also not realize that an average can of soda contains 44 grams of sugar, which may contribute to high blood sugar in diabetes or convert into fat tissue if it is not burned off. Recently I read about the Diabetic Diet endorsed by the American Diabetes Association on www.naturalstandard.com, a site that houses a lot of other great healthy ways to improve your diabetes. I learned that this diet is high in fiber, low in calories, and low in fat. I hope that sugar will be added to this soon enough!

What I find particularly challenging is how misleading food labels can be. I was recently selecting a fruit juice during a gas station pit stop and came across a bottle that was designed in an hourglass shape with a measuring tape imprinted on the midsection of the bottle. This bottle gave me the impression that the fruit juice was healthy. In the habit of reading nutrition facts, I discovered that the amount of sugar it contained was equivalent to the amount of sugar in a can of soda! Most patients I come across don't often read nutrition labels or don't understand how different ingredients, such as excessive sugar, may impact their health. Health experts often advise consumers to know their facts on basic nutrition when purchasing items at the grocery store. This way misleading products touting false health claims and sugary products, such as those mentioned in this article, can be put back on the shelves and healthier choices can be made.

Today, America is too fat, and getting fatter quickly. A major culprit is sugary drinks. Go to any fast food restaurant, and you will see hordes of fat people drinking down large sugary sodas. Supermarkets constantly have sales on soda to attract customers.

A large soda will have a lot more calories than the regular hamburger you're eating. A super sized soda or sugar sweetened iced tea will have much, much more calories than a regular burger and fries. People should drink ice water. Or diet drinks, or unsweetened ice tea.

Fat people are not only likely to get Type 2 diabetes, but they are also more prone to heart disease and a multitude of other illness. Fat people are a major reason for our skyrocketing medical care costs are.

Plus fat people don't look good. Be honest. Losing weight is hard enough, so we should help out by giving disincentive to consuming fattening sugar drinks.

We should tax the heck out of sugary drinks to (1) discourage their consumption, and (2) collect tax revenue from those who don't give a darn and drink the bad sugary stuff anyway--to help pay for the skyrocketing health care costs their consumption is causing.
