I suspect that the effort to tightly control blood sugars was done in combination with the high carbohydrate, low fat diet recommended by the ADA. Attempts at tight blood sugar control combined with high carb diets are a recipe for disaster, as so eloquently explained by Dr. Richard Bernstien with his law of small numbers. Large doses of insulin chasing large amounts of carbohydrate inevitably lead to large miscalculations and large hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic episodes, neither of which does much to assist the recovery of a sick person.
Tight glucose control is a very good thing, but it can only be achieved safely after reducing the carbohydrate intake to a very low level.

First its good, then its bad, then its good again! They don't reallu know. Doctors PRACTICE medicine! they use their best guessimate as to what is good and right or wrong with patients.
Stop worrying, Eat inmoderation from all the food groups uyou like, try to exercise, and for Gods sake stop worrying and just enjoy the life you have. Your going to die sometime, so you might as well die while being happy and not afraid of every little thing the fear mongors shout to you at the top of their voices. Live your life the way you choose, for yourself and not how someone else thinks would be better for you.
