Mood booster: Walnuts

In a sea of nuts, walnuts stand alone—they're the only variety to deliver a serious dose of omega-3 fatty acids, which help combat depression and improve mood. They also contain antioxidants and essential fatty acids that promote brain health. In a 2009 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, Tufts University scientists reported that walnuts have a positive effect on cognition. Eating moderate amounts regularly, they said, could help older adults perform better on tasks requiring motor and behavioral skills. A handful a day could make those who indulge feel smarter, more alert, and more focused. Try sprinkling a few over a salad, oatmeal, or pair them with cheese. (Since 1 ounce of walnuts packs about 185 calories, steer clear of large servings.)
